Some Perfect Reasons Why You Need to Be Inspired

Just as the walls of apartheid sunk and a new nation was born in South Africa there was echo in the desert. Be inspired like a young man thousands of nautical miles away, inspired by the selflessness and sacrifice of Madiba. Nelson Mandela had led the struggle to end the racial discrimination in his nation and to break the white domination for the birth for a true African State in South Africa. His story of sacrifice, suffering in prison and the commitment to live a legacy caught the attention of a young man who was just completing his studies in London.

In his words he said “we didn’t just want to live and die like that, we wanted to make history too, we wanted to attempt the impossible and leave footprints on the sand of time”. With the degree out of one of the finest schools in London and the passion to make history Newton Jibunoh embarked on the most audacious quest of his time, many had died in the same quest. Call it “crazy” yes it was! To drive a car to Nigeria all the way from London to Lagos across the Sahara Desert It was unthinkable!

The journey began in London in 1966, wadding through the soils of Europe in his Jeep called he rode over the hills and mountain crossing the strait of Gilberatha he arrived at the ocean of sand, an epitome of impossibility and daunting figure of death, the mighty Sahara desert. Away from the eyes of the world and the media, Newton drove into the sands of the desert and blasted off full speed as the dust arose to greet the eastern sky in acknowledgment of his arrival. Days and weeks went by in the ocean of sand, with brutal experiences of rigor and endurance and so many near death situations. Finally Newton arrived emerged from the Sahara Desert but this time his name got longer because of an addendum the “Desert Warrior” thus he continued his journey to Lagos his destination.

The story of the desert warrior and his conquest of the Sahara Desert is no doubt amazing and overwhelming but it becomes more powerful when you go back to where it started from. The conquest of the Sahara began by the victory of truth and justice in South Africa. Nelson Mandela in his struggle won the freedom for his nation but more much more than that it inspired a young man thousands of miles away to do the impossible. The fight we are involved in is a global war, as we struggle against the network of evil that threaten to sink our world, as we battle against corruption and injustice and hatred, though we fight alone our victories or defeat holds ramifications that are beyond yours. The victory of right is a victory for all of us. Every time we win we strengthen the spines of the next generation and give them the hope that whatever it is they believe is possible.

Inspiration is powerful; it is the fuel that drives us beyond impossibilities. What would have driven a young man in the prime of his years to dare such an ambitious feat at the possible cost of life? I remember his words “we were inspired.” Everyone remembers Madiba for his selfless struggle in the fight for the freedom of his people but to men like Newton he stands as a beacon of hope and the proof of possibility. Today the Nelson Mandela Park located within the Asaba International Airport is one of the few historic sites built to honour Madiba and guess who’s in behind it? Newton Jibunoh! As I walked the grounds of that park reveling in the beauty and serenity of the place I remember it all began with “INSPIRATION” I love the way Marianne Williamson captured it in a poem written in her book “Return to Love” it’s titled “Our deepest fears”

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are child of God

Your playing small does not serve the world

There is nothing about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you

We are all meant to shine, as children do

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

As we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to the same

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others

inspireNot all of us will lead struggles of the magnitude that Madiba undertook but we all have the chances to make a difference as we go about our everyday lives. It’s not about the size of the mountains we move, but to know that every ounce of ground claimed in the quest for a better world inspires the next generation to do the same. As we fight and win the battle against our own demons we empower the next generation to win their own fights too.

It is said that each generation must of necessity be an improvement of the old. It is our responsibility to live in such way to command the respect of those who are coming behind us. Our actions and exploits must fuel the passion and the drive of those who will hear about them or read about them in the annals of history. Our generations have a huge task ahead of us, behind lies an ugly canvas of history with horrific paintings of corruption, cruelty and senseless wars. We have to do better and shift the axis of history to a new angle so that the sun of hope and greatness can shine on our nation. No nation on earth attained or achieved its greatness purely by outside help, we all as individuals need to look inwards and call out the greatness in ourselves. We cannot wait any longer, we must begin now to:

Be Inspired to Think differently

We must move from a parasitic mindset to a contributory mindset. Enough of the give me! Give me!! Now it’s time to think of what can I give, what have I to offer for the good of mankind? We have to think of what we can do for our nation and not what our nation can do for us. We must think as stakeholders and not mere puns to be played around by rogues turned politicians. We have to think differently for at the foundation of every ills that society accommodates is a mindset that sustains and nurtures the super structure. The next level of our nation is at the mercy of our current mindset.

Be Inspired to Act selflessly

Selfishness is the mother of corruption! When we as a people begin to put our nation first in all things corruption will die a natural death all by itself. Selflessness is the engine of heroism; we need selfless people in industries, in banks, in schools. Professionals who think of life before cash, Teachers who think of impact not money, workers who think of productivity before compensation and leaders who think of progress before proceeds

We the common good of all and collective happiness of many becomes the priority all and sundry regardless of status or age, then we’d say a new dawn has indeed come upon us has a people. It’s possible we can make history if we dare to think differently and act selflessly in everything our hands find to do.
